solid day on the Little Miami River

solid day on the Little Miami River

Persistence.  That was the word of the day on the Little Miami River yesterday.  Jon and I met at Morgan's Canoe at Ft. Ancient and started off down the stream first thing in the morning.  The water level was fine and there was a bit of a stain in the rapids and that was good with me.  The day started off on the slow side, but finally we had a 10" smallmouth take a D&H Bugger.  The water looked perfect, so we kept swinging streamers without much luck.  Jon stuck with it and never let up and finally a nice smallie took the fly and we were off to the races.

The rest of the day was not about crazy action, but in believing in the fly and believing in the water we were fishing and not giving up on a section.  Each riffle and tailout produced sold, hard fighting fish.  We tried topwater...no luck.  We tried clousers...no luck.  We switched back to the D&H Bugger and gave it a bit longer 12lb. Big Nasty tippet section and the fly got down a bit more and the fish responded.

A great day of solid fish attacking the fly.
